Macarthur Airport (Long Island, New York)

MacArthur Airport needed a solution to treat stormwater flow contaminated with deicing fluid. The system designed is similar in design to the Buffalo Airport, NY system, with some modifications to accommodate the particular aspects of the airport. Most notably, the system is designed to comply with the NYDEC discharge permit that is based on monitoring of glycol in nearby groundwater wells. Seasonal diversion of stormwater to the treatment system allows for simple offline treatment of wintertime flow contaminated with deicing fluid. The treatment is also engineered to require minimal operator attention by sourcing nutrient solution make up and delivery to a local chemical supplier and using an aeration system configured to run in a simple on/off mode of operation.
