Goldmine Tailings - Suriname

(Goldmine Tailings -Suriname )

A remote goldmine in South America was in need of a treatment system for 16,000 m3/day of reclaim water. Gold at the mine is extracted from milled ore using cyanide and tailings are disposed of in a large tailings pond. Reclaim water from the tailings pond is used in the mill and contains ammonia from the photo-dissociation of residual cyanides.

An aerated lagoon was designed to produce an effluent sufficiently nitrified to avoid toxicity issues associated with un-ionized ammonia. The treatment system consists of an earthen lagoon and nine floating aerators. The aerated lagoon has been in operation since 2006.
