Chemical Plant Pilot Program

Increased production at a chemical plant in the UK led environmental staff to investigate alternatives to the construction and permitting of a costly new furnace stack. The system must prove treatment of high concentrations of organics and ammonia to justify wetlands based approach over combustion. An onsite pilot facility was designed to evaluate the upgrade of the constructed wetlands currently used at the facility. The pilot is configured to model an aerated lagoon followed by a constructed wetland retrofitted with Forced Bed AerationTM. Results indicated 99.9% removal of organics, while ammonia results are still being optimized to limit bacterial inhibition by free ammonia. The pilot is ongoing and a decision for wetland upgrade is expected in 2011.
