About Us

“There has to be an easier way to do this…”

That’s what our founder, Scott Wallace, was thinking back in 1982 while working as an operator at a mechanical wastewater treatment plant in Muscatine, Iowa, fixing pumps and buying chemicals.

Work with mechanical systems leads to the realization that “plants and bacteria work for free; people and machines don’t.” Biology offers the lowest cost and most sustainable path for wastewater treatment. The inspiration to create treatment systems that were mechanically simple, yet biologically complex, lead Scott through engineering school and into the field of treatment plant design. After working with a variety of different treatment technologies, Scott designed and built his first wetland twenty-five years ago, and we continue to develop innovative solutions to meet new environmental challenges.

Our experience has taught us that each environmental problem is unique and requires a custom solution. As a result, we can quickly get to the “heart of the matter,” understanding the economic, social and environmental aspects of a project. This allows us to deliver solutions that may be one-of-a-kind but are based on advanced science and practical know-how. Our clients benefit from this approach, and most of our work is from repeat clients.

Being at the forefront of developing wetland technology, we believe in sharing our knowledge. To date, we have written two engineering textbooks and over fifty scientific papers on wetland treatment systems. Making information available to people just entering the water treatment field helps make the world a better place.
